American Railroads

News each weekday of American railroads. Our focus is on freight rail, but Amtrak and commuter rail are also essential ingredients. Nothing published on holidays.

A Union Pacific drag crawls eastward across Calumet Sag Channel and through Blue Island, a major collection point for freight cars. That rough-looking track means there are speed restrictions in place, so that adds to the freight train glut in the Chicago area. Other carriers in this neighborhood include Indiana Harbor Belt (Genesee & Wyoming) and Iowa Interstate. BNSF, NS and CSX are other major players in Chicago. A plan getting off to a slow start, should help relieve the pressure.
