American Railroads

News each weekday of American railroads. Our focus is on freight rail, but Amtrak and commuter rail are also essential ingredients. Nothing published on holidays.

Florida car shop gets orders

By Leo King

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – Rick Padgett over at Reynolds Industrial Park, just south of Green Cove Springs, Fla., has a recipe to fix freight cars. He’s the president of Reliable Rail Services, a startup venture that began one year ago in August. The rail facilities were already in place, so all he had to do was write the recipe to bring in business from railroads and car users.

“We repair cars for Seminole Coal” and their Palatka, Fla. generating plant, Padgett said. They see cars from Conrad Yelvington, too.

They also fix and modify locomotives.

Padgett added nearly 10 employees since mid-January, and at last count he was up to 25 in the non-union shop.

Padgett said he received a contract from CSX to repair and upgrade 140 locomotives this year, but neither he nor CSX would say how much the contract is worth.
